Ben Uyeda
Co-Founder and Creative Director
RESET Hotel
Ben’s designs have reached more than half a billion people and have been built on six different continents. After stepping away from the award-winning architecture firm he co-founded, as well as an Ivy League teaching position, Ben took a hands-on design-build approach and used the internet and social media to share his ideas with the masses. As his following grew Ben scaled his projects from small DIY affordable projects to houses, installation art, and now a 65 room hotel on 180 acres right next to Joshua Tree National Park. Ben has parlayed having over 2 million followers/subscribers across YouTube and Instagram into advisory roles at several startups in fields such as steel fabrication, digital manufacturing, and artificial intelligence.
Ben received both of his degrees, a Bachelor and a Master of Architecture, from Cornell University in upstate New York. After graduating in 2005, Ben was hired as a visiting lecturer at Cornell where he created an original curriculum for teaching sustainable design. This curriculum emphasized the importance of critically understanding contemporary media and popular culture when trying to implement environmentally progressive technologies.
Ben Co-founded ZeroEnergy Design (ZED), an architecture firm that specializes in ecologically conscious housing. ZED’s work has been published in numerous publications including Architectural Record, Popular Mechanics, Design New England, and Boston Home. ZED was also named one of the 50 best architecture firms, as well one of the 3 best firms for Sustainable design by Architect Magazine’s Architect 50 List for 2015.
Ben’s first book, HomeMade Modern was published by Running Press, and Ben gave a talk at TEDx Jamaica Plain titled Why I Publish My Design Ideas Instead of Patenting Them.
In 2018 Ben built shipping container house in Joshua tree CA. The documentary series he published on YouTube was viewed over 20 million times and was the catalyst for meeting fellow RESET co-founders.
